All grown up

I know I’ve been saying it a lot lately, but I’m sure not going to stop. I’m so proud of Dekker these days! He has come alive, and he is sure growing up fast! I’ll get to that in a minute.

We slept great last night! Our house cooled off to around 22, which is INCREDIBLE! Once I woke up, I panicked and closed everything up in an effort to keep our house somewhat cooler than it is outside. How I woke up…

Brady locked his keys in his van for the second time in…a couple of weeks maybe? Honey, I love you, but never again ok? And I mean he did this in Saskatoon. Being that we live a solid 60 kms from Saskatoon, its super inconvenient. Last time it happened, he had already hauled all his tools into the house he was working in, so I just came into the city  at some point in the afternoon and got over it. No big deal right? This morning, he locked himself out after getting his morning coffee at Tim Hortons before he even got to work. NOT ideal, like I said. So I got that phone call at about 7:45, which is suuuper early around here! I complained at him for a bit and then said to give me a minute and I’ll call him back, because my brain just wasn’t functioning well yet and I couldn’t help him come up with a solution. I remembered last time he had locked himself out, my mom had said that if she was around and knew about it, she would have happily gone in and used her CAA to help him. She bailed us out using her CAA multiple times as kids, but now they’re really sticky about her being on site when they arrive, otherwise they leave. So I remembered that, waited until about 8:15 and, hoping she’d be up already, I gave her a call.

My beautiful mother was at Timmys in about 20 minutes. It was awesome, and Brady and I were both sooo grateful. That being said though, Brady – NEVER AGAIN! We’re gonna figure out some kind of hide-a-key or something tonight.

Onto the rest of the day! My mom is shopping for new glasses, as her most recent pair of frames just broke. Its hard to try on glasses when you need glasses to see yourself! So we met in Saskatoon for lunch at Costco with the intention of glasses shopping a bit together. I just have to say for Costco, I needed to buy some Advil. I know, I’m not supposed to take Advil in my third trimester, and I don’t, but Brady still does. I went to buy a mondo bottle since they last forever in our house. What I found was that I could buy 180 regular strength Advil liquid gels for about $22 OR I could buy 250 knock-off Advils liquid gels for $9. Yup. Nine dollars. WHAT?! Blew my mind! Needless to say, I went no name. Awesome deal!

We glasses shopped a little bit but exhausted all Costco’s options pretty quick and moved on to our eye doctors right afterwards. While we were there, we got another little adjustment to Dekker’s glasses. He did awesome, and the girl who always adjusts his glasses was so chatty and happy to see him. She said multiple times how much she likes him, and that he is just a bright light in her day. I love that, because while she can say whatever she’d like to get my business, I really believe her! Because he’s a light in my day too! I get it 🙂 We tried a bunch more glasses on my mom, and I took pictures with my phone so she could see herself after putting on glasses she could see through. We pretty much picked the pair to beat before heading out to one more place.

* I just have to say here that, while Dekker is all of a sudden more grown up, he is not too old to poop his pants, or lick mirrors.

We headed out to Eyes International to see if there were any better options than the pair we liked. We tried on a lot, and there was one contender in my opinion. One solid competitor for the glasses that we liked back at our eye doctors office, but the color wasn’t quite right, and the ones at the office come with sunglasses, so we opted out. We all went outside, had a hug, and went our separate ways. Oh, and Dekker licked the mirror there too. Gross, hey?

So to get to why I saw Dekker in a different light today. If you know Dekker, or have spent any time with him ever, or really if you’ve read any posts on here before, you’ll know that Dekker is a very cautious boy. He likes to be held a LOT! I’m sure part of that comes with being the only child and being doted on constantly by everyone, which is great, but I know my body. It is no longer responsible for me to take him to too many places on too many errands right now by myself. My arms and back cannot handle to carry him everywhere! I wish they could, but I know they can’t. We’ve been trying to slowly pick him up less. When he reaches up, we are instead coming down to him, and I think its gradually paying off. Today he surprised me by riding in his stroller in Costco without complaint, and running around both eye places on his own, no complaints, and coming to hold my hand when I asked him too. I didn’t have to carry him hardly at all! I’m sooo thankful to God that he’s not super mischievous.

After we parted ways with my mom, I rechecked my list and realized I didn’t need to go to as many places as I thought, but I needed to hit up Lawson Mall for a few different things. I thought I had to go kill a bunch of time at Walmart but I actually needed almost nothing there! So instead, we hit Lawson, and I took a risk. I pulled Dekker out of the car and plopped him on the ground. He is almost always put into a stroller or cart, but I just put him down, grabbed him hand, and took off. And he just came! I’m sure some of you reading this are thinking “Um, ya, he’s almost two! He’d better walk on his own!” But he’s always been wary of new places and new people. We’ve never really pushed him this way. But I risked it and gave it a try. No complaint from him all the way to the mall. Once inside, it was much cooler and he even picked up speed a little. We stopped at my hair place and made an appointment for him to get his very first haircut. :*( *sniff* I’m sooo sad to be cutting his hair! But with his glasses, his long hair gets tangled around his ears and sticks out funny and its just basically time. I made an appointment with the girl that does my hair, because I know she has young kids whose hair she cuts, so I trust her. She actually came by the front desk while I was making an appointment and seemed happy to see us, and excited to cut his hair next week. Everyone in the salon was taken with him and his glasses 🙂 Ya, he’s pretty much adorable.

From our hair place, we walked pretty well to the other end of the mall to Telus to swap my phone out. Again. Whatever, no big deal. I had a nice chat with one of the girls working there. I actually dated her brother briefly in high school and its fun to catch up after so long 🙂 At that stop, Dekker started to get a little fidgety and wanted up. So I held him and he slumped on me while I visited. When it was done, I promptly put him back down and took his hand, and we kept walking. It was sooo surprising how he just accepted it! I mean, I expected something of a fight, but nothing! So we quickly hit up Safeway for a couple of things. Again, I risked it and grabbed a basket in my other hand instead of a cart. First some yogurt, then all the way across the store for bananas. We paid and left, and walked aaaaall the way back to where we had come in, to the car, and Dekker waited patiently while I put the groceries in the backseat before I loaded him into his own seat. I plunked him in there, and he was out cold. Quiet all the way home, and now napping in his crib.

I was completely floored! I’ve said it once or twice before, but I’ll say it again. When Dekker got his glasses, he came alive! His personality changed in a really nice way, and he has become MUCH more tolerant of change. Not in every circumstance, and of course he still has his meltdowns, but they are sooo much further apart, and somewhat to be expected of a little boy! My big little boy is all of a sudden ready to be a brother!

He’s ready for something anyway. Love him. So much.
